Greetings everyone my name is Scott Saye and I was asked to write a small testimony about how Celebrate Recovery and the Lord have changed my life.

In March of this year my life was on a downward spiral. I was consumed by my addictions and had lost all hope and belief in myself. I was drinking pretty much all of the time and taking mass quantities of prescription painkillers. I pretty much didn’t care about myself or anyone else. I felt like I had to have the booze and the drugs just to function in everyday life. I would get up in the morning and drink 6 to 8 beers before going to work at 10:00 AM. I would take painkillers throughout the day just to keep a buzz until I got off work. After work I would continue drinking until I would pass out or it was gone. This was a cycle that I had been doing for 12 years. I had tried to stop many times by myself or through A.A. or through secular programs. Nothing had ever worked. The longest I was able to stay sober was 6 months. So basically I had given up all hope and kind of settled in the fact I was going to Drink and drug myself to death.

Well one morning I woke up after another night of drinking and taking pain killers and something had come over me. I didn’t want to live like that anymore.

I didn’t know it at the time but it was the lord speaking to me. That very same day I quit both my jobs because I was a bartender and I knew I could not be around it if I was going to try to get sober. I checked myself into detox at Owensboro Mercy. I stayed there for 4 days. The day I was supposed to leave I got a visitor Tom Wedding. I had met Tom briefly from a program I had been attending the year before called Celebrate Recovery. We talked for a while and I told him my desire to overcome my addictions. He asked me if I would be interested in coming back to Celebrate Recovery. At first I didn’t want to because I had fallen the past year when I was in the program and had stopped coming all together. I was embarrassed and ashamed and didn’t know how the people would accept me if I came back. Eventually Tom talked me into going.

It has been about 2 months since I have started going again. I was dead wrong when I thought that people would shun me. The people of this program welcomed me back with open arms. They are very loving, caring, good hearted Christian people. Through their help and the Lord I have been able to overcome my addictions and have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I leave tomorrow for Lifeline Ministries for 6 months. I will miss everyone terribly. I want to thank everyone for their love and support and to anyone that reads this to know there is hope and you can overcome anything through our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am so thankful that God has put in place a City Council of God fearing individuals in Calhoun. Because of this they have a direct line of communication open to hear the Will of God. They have a love for the residents of Calhoun and show that by trying to represent them in city government. I have a Calhoun address but live outside the city and spend 12-14 hours a day working in the city limits. I love it here.
I am aware that Calhoun and other towns in McLean County have a lot of problems with people effected by drugs and alcohol. Not just the people taking drugs or drinking alcohol but all of their relatives and neighbors. The cost to the city and county to fight crimes caused by these diseases and cost to our governments to try to pick up the pieces of hurting children and other family members is very great. My heart hurts for people in our community. Thank God that now my heart hurts for people that are addicted.
The emphasis of this letter is not to focus on me. It just so happens that I can’t tell of what God has done without relating to my experiences. I am a part of God’s House of Hope. In 2005 God shared with us the vision for The Harvest House. It is to be a residential facility for men to live that want to break free from the chains of drugs, alcohol and other hang-ups. They will be saturated with God’s Word and Love and many invitations to give their hearts and lives to Him. I have had people that are close to me that could not break free from that life style. When they would try to, drug dealers would break into their house over and over and shoot drugs into their veins and threaten their lives unless they kept quiet. They were in a hopeless trap of wanting to get out of that life but couldn’t do it on their own.
I started visiting Celebrate Recovery because I wanted to understand what God was doing through this program to change these lives and how God could use me to make a difference in the lives of those that worked in the pallet repair shop at God’s House of Hope. What I saw was a large number of people hungry for God to change them and break the chains that would free them from that hopelessness. I also saw church members that really cared about them and showered them with love by spending a lot of time with them. They really did get it when God told us to put others first ahead of our own needs. They helped them with physical needs as well. They helped them clear things up with the law and continually showered them with love. Because of this love the addicts opened up their hearts to God’s Love, the only person who is qualified to make a change in their heart and change their actions.
Guess what. They are changing, their kids are effected, their parents are effected, their relatives are effected, their neighbors are effected and our community is effected in positive ways. Not every addict attending Celebrate Recovery has given all to Jesus. Some have not let go of the only life they know. They are still attending services and learning God’s Word. They are still seeking for change.
How about you? Do you want your city to be less infected with drugs? Do you take seriously the second greatest commandment to love your neighbor as yourself? Have you taken the time to read the scriptures in the Bible that describe hell? Do you really care that you can make a difference in someone’s life here and in eternity?
Tuesday, March 13, 2007, people in support of The Harvest House asked the city council again to vote to add a residential class to the zoning at God’s House of Hope. The supporters were not there to make a name for themselves or to have a ministry that is popular. They are there to answer God’s call to love everyone. To show a way for people to break free from a lifestyle that will hurt them, their families and their community and help them escape an eternity of everlasting chains and pain.
Your city council members are committed to representing you, the residents of Calhoun.Â
They take that very seriously. From their comments at the meeting some of them have had at least 10 people call them and ask that they vote “no” to adding a residential class to the zoning that exists now.
How about you, the majority of Calhoun residents that did not call? Can you do your part and call a city council person to let them know you want to make a difference and that you want to take seriously the call to spread the Gospel to every person. You can do this by asking them to vote “yes” to adding a residential class to our zoning that will allow us to start The Harvest House at God’s House of Hope.
This letter is sincerely not intended to hurt anyone or embarrass anyone, especially not the city council. They are doing their job and representing the residents that have spoken up.
Personally, when I started trying to work with the addicts, I got very frustrated. The ones that hadn’t really given their all to Jesus would constantly con me. I would think, why waste my time; they can’t even be honest with themselves. God changed me. I heard a sermon preached about what the Bible says hell is like. God gave me an urgency to do everything I can to lead them to Jesus so they wouldn’t have to go there. I realized that the con games were all they knew. They were still hurting people trying to get out of those chains and bondage.
I consider that at least 30% of Calhoun’s population are addicts or people directly effected by them. Even if you don’t have a desire to help them, wouldn’t you like to help the other 70% to live in a drug free community?
Dysfunctional families stay that way because they choose to ignore the issues that make them that way. It’s a lot of work to be honest with each other and take the steps to change. A city may stay infected with drugs if they don’t make the effort to do what they can to lead the way for people to make changes in their lives. Even if your not willing to love these people or do not have the energy to help, please make it possible for the people that God has called to help and are answering that call to make a difference.
These addicts are already in the community. It will be less threatening to you that are afraid of The Harvest House opening because they will live in a controlled atmosphere that will be monitored closely. They will not roam the streets like they do now. They will be so saturated by God’s Word and will learn how to be productive citizens. They will learn job skills and will gradually work their way back into the community. They can only be better citizens not worse.
Please if you have any questions call 273-3670. There are testimonies posted of lives that have already been changed by the work God is doing through the tool, “Celebrate Recovery”.
I asked my husband if this letter sounded offensive. (It is sincerely not intended to.) He said he didn’t feel offended just a little guilt. If this is the case with you, let God use this opportunity to show His will to you.

Shelia Hogle knows she has been saved by God’s grace alone. She is recovering from alcohol and marijuana use. She said what brought her to Celebrate Recovery is that she had finally hit rock bottom, when her daughter was removed from her custody and put in foster care for 40 days. She says she knew the Lord, and she had been saved and baptized in the past, but she had turned her back on the Lord. Thank God he never turns his back on us. Her marriage was also in shambles and had been for a long time. Her daughter was gone due to stupid choices she made, the way she saw it was she had two choices at this point, to continue down the path of destruction or to make some drastic changes. At this point in her life she knew she had to choose the straight and narrow path; the only one that leads to Jesus Christ! She rededicated her life to the Lord in July 2005 at CBC and she was baptized in the Green River and she joined Celebrate Recovery. She knew then there was no other way but up!

Shelia says Celebrate Recovery has been a God send to her and her family. She hates to think where she would be today without it. She praises God everyday for this program and everyone involved. The Lord has put so many wonderful people in her life and she loves and appreciates each and everyone of them. She feels blessed to have so many brothers and sisters in Christ. She is proud to be a part of Celebrate Recovery. The Lord has blessed her in so many ways she says it would take days for her to list them all. She is so very thankful to Calhoun Baptist Church for giving her the receptionist position. Today she can truly say she has peace, joy, and happiness in her life. The Lord is also in the miracle business, she says, just ask her husband! She prays that others will not wait until they have hit rock bottom, like she did, give Celebrate Recovery a try and just watch and she what wonderful things the Lord has in store for you!

She says Celebrate Recovery and Jesus have made her who she is today and Lord knows she has come a long way. She owes all the Glory, Honor, and Praise to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!

I would like to add that Shelia has accepted the position as co-leader of Steps 1-3 Substance Abuse for Women at CBC and LUMC. I am excited to she her grow even more and the Lord!

Terry Shocklee has been attending Livermore United Methodist Church for 29 years. She is just amazed at the changes happening in the church since they have started Celebrate Recovery. She says many good things has come out of Celebrate Recovery and the church has grown in members.

Terry first heard about Celebrate Recovery when her daughters were talking about going to the Celebrate Recovery in Calhoun. Not long after that the program started in Livermore and Terry has been cooking every Wednesday night for the people that come there for the meetings. When asked what Celebrate Recovery has meant to her she replied, “Helping others and meeting new people, also, feeding them food and praying they will be fed by God”. She said some of their favorite foods are chicken and dumplings, pork roast and potatoes and carrots, and chili.

She feels so happy and thankful to God for each and every one of them. She says some of them make 180 degree changes in their lives and because of them she has made a lot of changes in her life.

Mark Willis is a firm believer in Jesus Christ. He knows he has been saved by God’s grace. He has always believed there was a God, but he never really knew him. Thanks to him being a loving God and God of second chances, he has been given one, and for that he’s grateful.

His drug of choice was meth and the lifestyle that came with it. While using meth he began to neglect the people that loved him the most and he didn’t like the person he had become. Little did he know he would need God soon enough. In 2003 he ended up in jail, he had never been in jail and didn’t know how to handle it, so he asked the lord to help him through it. He started reading his bible a lot and got to know the real God. He felt God healing him immediately. The more he learned, the more he wanted.

When he was released 6 months later he heard a good friend of his, whom he had grown up with, Eric Girvin, had started a program called Celebrate Recovery. What a blessing it has been for him, and he has been involved ever since and he loves it. He says his faith has grown tremendously.

Mark is now in leadership for Celebrate Recovery. He wants to be able to help people that are going through what he went through and introduce them to Jesus Christ. Because with God there is no obstacle you can not overcome.Â

He would like to thank Celebrate Recovery and thank Jesus for molding him into the person he is today.

I don’t think anyone sets their goal in life as becoming an addict or alcoholic, at least I didn’t. My name is Rose Rickard, I am a believer in Jesus Christ and I struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Prescription drugs became the monkey on my back, and when I couldn’t get them anymore I got what I could where I could. I started taking the pain killers in 1989 when I ruptured a disk in my back and had to have surgery.

But I found that the pills could stop more than just back pain, they could numb everything I didn’t want to feel or think about, and so began a nightmare from hell itself. When I could no longer con the doctors into giving me what I now had to have, well, you soon learn where you can get what you need. And so I ended up on Methadone, very strong, very addictive and very deadly. I had lived that way for years, had stopped going to church and thought God had given up on me.

I only went to Celebrate Recovery to see if I could find a little comfort for my troubled soul, not with the intention of getting off my drugs, just maybe to see if there could possibly be some hope there. What I found was much more, people just like me, who had a life and hope, because they had found a reason to get off drugs and alcohol. And people who really cared about me, loved me just where I was.

Well, I discovered with help from my new friends that God still loved me, right there where I was, I didn’t have to be perfect first, just had to trust Him one day at a time. He saved me, set me free, and now I want to see others set free, and come to know this Jesus, and these wonderful people in Celebrate Recovery, who can love you right where you are. To come to know a life free from the furtive, restless, desperate searching for something to fill the emptiness within you.

Thank God someone cared enough to see the me inside and not the ugly on the outside, thank you, Lord, and thank you guys, I’ll never forget what you gave me, you gave me your love.

Christy Ward truly loves the lord. She has only been attending Celebrate Recovery for a couple of months now, but you can tell by the way she talks that she has known the lord for some time.

Like most of us, she has made some bad choices. She was honest in saying she had a problem with cocaine and marijuana use in her past. But now she knows it’s time for a change and she knows she must give it all to God.

Christy first heard about Celebrate Recovery while incarcerated in Muhlenburg County Jail. I would like to say how wonderful it is that Celebrate Recovery is reaching those in jail, who need it just as much as the next person, if not more. She said Celebrate Recovery means so much to her. It gives her more days to worship the lord and helps keep her mind off evil things.

I would also like to add that God has given her the gift of music, she has a beautiful voice and she sings praises to the lord every chance she gets. It’s just a joy to see Christy at Celebrate Recovery, we were friends in High School. It’s amazing how God works to bring people back together again.
