Ministry & Volunteer Opportunities
Food Bank, Food Pantry & Clothes Closet volunteer opportunities:
- Box Cheese Commodities
CSFP Commodities are for senior citizens in the county. We receive them on the third Tuesday of every month. The truck arrives at Heaven’s Grocery Store Food Bank about 10:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed to unpack the cases of food and then fill the boxes for the seniors that will pick them up the next day. With 10 volunteers the process usually takes about 2 hours.- Load Cheese Commodities into Vehicles
Usually on the third Wednesday of the month between 8-10 a.m. the seniors pick up their commodities. We need volunteers to pack the boxes to their vehicles. The boxes weigh about 35 pounds. We have carts to push them out to the vehicles.- Repackage Food
Once or twice a month we get a truck load of Sausage from Jimmy Dean and misc. foods from CRS One Source. These foods are packed in cases. Some of the cases are broken. We need volunteers to repackage the food into gallon Ziploc bags to give away in the food pantry. Sometimes the truck gets to Heaven’s Grocery Store Food Bank late in the afternoon and early evening. The longest amount of time we have spent doing this is about 2 ½ hours.- Provide Freezer Space
Sometimes the frozen food is donated so frequently that we run out of freezer storage space. We need people that have a freezer fairly close to Calhoun & would let the food pantry use the space.- Stock Shelves
The food pantry is open on Mondays, Thursdays & Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. We need volunteers to restock the shelves on the days after we are open. Food is brought from the warehouse to restock the shelves with.- Truck Drivers
We need drivers that can go to Nashville & Memphis, TN, Lynnville, IN and Owensboro, KY. We have 4-5 pick-ups a week in Owensboro. The other locations are usually once a month or less.- Warehouse clean-up
Every week we need help loading the bad produce and hauling to the dumpster which is only a short distance. Also to spray wash the bins were the bad produce has been.
1-on-1 Volunteer Opportunities
In the volunteer positions listed below you will have personal contact with the people in need. Try to shower them with love. Listen to their needs. Make use of every opportunity to help them with their spiritual needs.
- Assist people food shopping
There are close to 300 families that shop at the food pantry once a month. In order for all families to receive food items some quantities are limited. Also we average about 2 new families every time we are open. We need volunteers to help the new ones to become familiar with the shopping area & give them ideas of what foods we have that day they can put together & make a meal. You can help them be aware of the foods that have limited quantities.- Assist the people in carrying out their food
Some people physically have a hard time getting their food to the car. We need volunteers to push their food in wagons out & load it in their vehicles.- Clothes Closet
We need volunteers to hang donated clothes on hangers and place on specified racks. Keep the racks organized. Keep other items organized.- Assist people clothes shopping
We need volunteers to assist people looking for certain sizes or certain items.- Assist in cleaning the facilities
We are so blessed to be able to use the facilities at the God’s House of Hope. Miles Enterprises and Debra Seymour have provided for most of the needs we have incurred. We want to show our appreciation. One way is to keep everything we can clean and neat. We need volunteers to sweep, mop & vacuum the floors and keep the trash emptied.- Help with Fundraising Events
We have 2-4 fundraisers a year. We need lots of help to get foods prepared, work in the booths, manage sports events, set up tents, tables & chairs, pick up supplies and clean-up.- Prayer Counselors
During hours of operation we have clients that have prayer requests or need someone to listen. We need volunteers that will be there to pray with them, tell them about Jesus and make sure they have a Bible (we provide).- Church Groups or Community Groups
We need church groups to volunteer one Saturday a month to operate the food pantry. Duties would be checking people in, updating their file, guide their shopping experience, weighing their food, and taking time to share God’s love with them.- Take Angel Food Orders
The first part of every month we need people to take orders and payment for Angel Food units & specials at God’s House of Hope office.- Pick up Angel Food
Usually the third Saturday of the month we need volunteers to drive or ride to Dixon, KY to help unloadthe food and reload God’s House of Hope’s part of the Angel Food. When we get to Heaven’s Grocery Store Food Bank with it, we unload in specified areas to be able to distribute to the people who have ordered.
- Distribute Angel Food
Usually the third Saturday we need 10 – 15 people to hand out assigned items to the people as they go through an assembly line collecting their units or specials.
